It’s time…it’s time…it’s Book End Time! Welcome to this week’s Book End, highlighting the week’s literary and library events here in Hawaiʻi.

Wow, Saturday is stacked!  There’s three different library book sales, a few fun library programs, lots of different kinds of author events, and stormtroopers!  Yes, stormtroopers!  Don’t miss out on all the action this weekend.

B&N Book Fair Round-up

Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall will be providing a book fair weekend (Fri – Sun) for Assets School.  Part of the proceeds from purchases made in the store (including the coffee shop) will be donated to Assets School.  Usually you need to tell the cashier you’d like your purchase to go to the organization or provide a voucher/code number.  Be sure to talk with an Assets School representative (if they are present in the store), before buying your items.  The best part of this book fair is that there are a lot of fun events planned including the Star Wars Stormtroopers, visits from illustrator Tammy Yee and author Sue Cowing, and a special storytime hosted by Assets School.  Check out the schedule below for more information on these appearances.

Friday, November 18

• Sing-Along with Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band– “Uncle Wayne” Watkins and the Howling Dog Band will inspire keiki to get up, move, and sing along with them on a variety of classic children’s songs, as well as  Uncle Wayne’s original compositions.  Watkins, who currently serves as Director of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Children’s Center, is an Early Childhood educator and children’s advocate. The free 45-minute program is suitable for keiki ages 3 through 5, accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library; 10:30 A.M.  Call 831-6831 for more info.

• Friends of the Waialua Public Library book sale – Friends of the Waialua Public Library holds a book sale at the library every 3rd Saturday of the month! There is also a bake sale at the book sale. • Friends of the Mililani Public Library book sale– The Friends of the Mililani Public Library will hold a book sale at the library. All proceeds go to the support of the library.  Mililani Public Library (95-450 Makaimoimo St., Mililani); 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  For more info, call the library at 627-7470.

• Hanafuda: Hawaii Style – Hanafuda is a Japanese card game played with 12 suits of seasonal flowers or plant cards representing the 12 months of the year.  Helen Nakano will teach the basics of Hanafuda: Hawaii Style, a cherished island tradition once enjoyed in the plantation communities by children and adults of all cultures.  Nakano will also share myths and symbolism of the card designs, and discuss methods of teaching others the game.  In the second half of the program, participants will be encouraged to form teams and will receive “hands on” game experience.  This two-hour program is suitable for ages 8 and older.  Aina Haina Public Library (5246 Kalanianaole Highway); 10:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.  For more information or to register, please call the Library at 377-2456.

• Tales with Auntie Brenda – Freitas-Obregon, children’s librarian at Kalihi-Palama Public Library, is known as Auntie Brenda and revels in sharing the love of books and reading with children of all ages, and their families.  Freitas-Obregon will present “Tales with Auntie Brenda.”  Kapolei Public Library; 10:30 A.M.  For more info, call the library at 693-7050.

• Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading.  This week they will be reading Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey. • Book Celebration: Hawai‘inuiākea Monograph series, I Ulu I Ke Kumu – This event will launch The Hawai`inuiākea Monograph Series.  Dean Maenette Benham of Hawai`inuiākea will share her vision of the series.  I Ulu I Ke Kumu editor, Puakea Nogelmeier, will discuss the theme of the volume and the contributions of the authors. Music provided by Keawe Lopes & friends. • R&D:Ex Libris Presents – Adventures in Publishing – R&D presents a panel discussion with 3 authors who work in 3 very different disciplines. • “Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten?” free presentation and screening – Children ages 2 through 5, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to attend the regularly-scheduled toddler/preschool storytime 30 minutes prior to the screening time.  These optional screenings are quick, easy, and non-invasive.  Results are confidential.  Parents or caregivers may also choose to schedule private screenings at a later date with EEIP Project staff.  When your child enters kindergarten, he or she will participate in the Hawaii State School Readiness Assessment and hopefully be ready to pass it with flying colors!  Kaimuki Public Library (1041 Koko Head Ave.); 11:00 A.M.  For more information about the project, please call the LDAH-EEIP School Readiness Project at 696-5361.

• Book Panel: The Painted King – (Big Island) New York art conservator Glenn Wharton is visiting Hawai‘i to launch The Painted King: Art Activism, and Authenticity in Hawai‘i, which recounts his experiences conserving the original King Kamehameha statue in Kohala.  The North Kohala Community Resource Center is sponsoring this panel with the author at the Senior Center in Kapa‘au on the island of Hawai‘i.  North Kohala Community Resource Center in Kapaa; 3:00 P.M.  For more information, visit the UH Press Blog.
